SIC (US 1987) : The history of Penn-Mar dates back to 1980, when a group of concerned families from the states of Maryland and Pennsylvania met to discuss the future of their sons and daughters with mental disabilities. Back then, there was no local human services agency, and thus no program designed to meet the diverse needs of their adult children. In addition, families lacked the necessary support to assure their children retained the valuable skills they had learned in school during special education classes.
To remedy the situation, the families created a program that began in the Methodist Church of Maryland Line, MD. From that humble and courageous beginning springs the programs and services that today make up Penn-Mar Human Services. Today, Penn-Mar serves more than 400 individuals with developmental disabilities with a range of educational, and programs.
Growth also has been geographic. Today, Penn-Mar has facilities and offers services in northern Baltimore, eastern Carroll and western Harford counties in Maryland, as well as southern York County in Pennsylvania.
